Psalm and Prayer of the Day August 17, 2020

Psalm 97

The Lord is king! Let the earth rejoice;
    let the many coastlands be glad!
Clouds and thick darkness are all around him;
    righteousness and justice are the foundation of his throne.
Fire goes before him,
    and consumes his adversaries on every side.
His lightnings light up the world;
    the earth sees and trembles.
The mountains melt like wax before the Lord,
    before the Lord of all the earth.

The heavens proclaim his righteousness;
    and all the peoples behold his glory.
All worshipers of images are put to shame,
    those who make their boast in worthless idols;
    all gods bow down before him.
Zion hears and is glad,
    and the towns[a] of Judah rejoice,
    because of your judgments, O God.
For you, O Lord, are most high over all the earth;
    you are exalted far above all gods.

10 The Lord loves those who hate[b] evil;
he guards the lives of his faithful;
he rescues them from the hand of the wicked.
11 Light dawns[c] for the righteous,
and joy for the upright in heart.
12 Rejoice in the Lord, O you righteous,
and give thanks to his holy name!

Prayer

We rejoice in your generous goodness, O God, and celebrate your lavis gifts to us this day, for you show us your love in giving Jesus Christ for the salvation of the world.

Especially we give thanks for
the labors of those who serve us today…
friends with whom we share…
those whom we love and who love us…
opportunities for work to help others…
all beauty that delights us…
(other prayers of thanksgiving)…

Gracious God, we know you are close to all in need, and by our prayers for others we come closer to you.  We are bold to claim for others your promises of new life in Jesus Christ, as we claim them for ourselves.

Especially we pray for those in dangerous occupations…
physicians and nurses…
those who are ill or confined to nursing homes…
those who mourn…
the Roman Catholic Church…
(other prayers of intercession)…
Amen.
