Psalm and Prayer of the Day July 9

Psalm 116

Thanksgiving for Recovery from Illness

I love the Lord, because he has heard
    my voice and my supplications.
Because he inclined his ear to me,
    therefore I will call on him as long as I live.
The snares of death encompassed me;
    the pangs of Sheol laid hold on me;
    I suffered distress and anguish.
Then I called on the name of the Lord:
    “O Lord, I pray, save my life!”

Gracious is the Lord, and righteous;
    our God is merciful.
The Lord protects the simple;
    when I was brought low, he saved me.
Return, O my soul, to your rest,
    for the Lord has dealt bountifully with you.

For you have delivered my soul from death,
    my eyes from tears,
    my feet from stumbling.
I walk before the Lord
    in the land of the living.
10 I kept my faith, even when I said,
    “I am greatly afflicted”;
11 I said in my consternation,
    “Everyone is a liar.”

12 What shall I return to the Lord
for all his bounty to me?
13 I will lift up the cup of salvation
and call on the name of the Lord,
14 I will pay my vows to the Lord
in the presence of all his people.
15 Precious in the sight of the Lord
is the death of his faithful ones.
16 O Lord, I am your servant;
I am your servant, the child of your serving girl.
You have loosed my bonds.
17 I will offer to you a thanksgiving sacrifice
and call on the name of the Lord.
18 I will pay my vows to the Lord
in the presence of all his people,
19 in the courts of the house of the Lord,
in your midst, O Jerusalem.
Praise the Lord!

Prayer:
Loving God, as the rising sun chases away the night, so you have scattered the power of death in the rising of Jesus Christ, and you bring us all blessings in him.  Especially we thank you for
the community of faith in our church…
those with whom we work or share common concerns…
the diversity of your children…
indications of your love at work in the world…
those who work for reconciliation…
(other prayers of thanksgiving…)

Mighty God, with the dawn of your love you reveal your victory over all that would destroy or harm, and you brighten the lives of all who need you.
Especially we pray for
families suffering separation…
people different from ourselves…
those isolated by sickness or sorrow…
the victims of violence or warfare…
the church in the Pacific region….
(other prayers of intercession…). Amen.

Psalm and Prayer of the Day July 8

Psalm 96

Praise to God Who Comes in Judgment

O sing to the Lord a new song;
    sing to the Lord, all the earth.
Sing to the Lord, bless his name;
    tell of his salvation from day to day.
Declare his glory among the nations,
    his marvelous works among all the peoples.
For great is the Lord, and greatly to be praised;
    he is to be revered above all gods.
For all the gods of the peoples are idols,
    but the Lord made the heavens.
Honor and majesty are before him;
    strength and beauty are in his sanctuary.

Ascribe to the Lord, O families of the peoples,
    ascribe to the Lord glory and strength.
Ascribe to the Lord the glory due his name;
    bring an offering, and come into his courts.
Worship the Lord in holy splendor;
    tremble before him, all the earth.

10 Say among the nations, “The Lord is king!
    The world is firmly established; it shall never be moved.
    He will judge the peoples with equity.”
11 Let the heavens be glad, and let the earth rejoice;
    let the sea roar, and all that fills it;
12     let the field exult, and everything in it.
Then shall all the trees of the forest sing for joy
13     before the Lord; for he is coming,
    for he is coming to judge the earth.
He will judge the world with righteousness,
    and the peoples with his truth.

Prayer

God of all mercies,we praise you that you have brought us to this new day, brightening our lives with the dawn of promise and hope in Jesus Christ.  Especially we thank you for
the warmth of sunlight, the wetness of rain, and all that nourishes the earth…
the presence and power of your Spirit…
the support and encouragement we receive from others…
those who provide for public safety and well-being…
the mission of the church around the world…
(other prayers of thanksgiving)…

Merciful God, strengthen us in prayer that we may lift up the brokenness of this world for your healing, and share in the saving love of Jesus Christ.  Especially we pray for
those in positions of authority over others…
the lonely and forgotten…
children without families or homes…
agents of caring and relief…
the church in Asia and the Middle East…
(other prayers of intercession)… Amen.

Psalm and Prayer of the Day July 7

Psalm 12

Plea for Help in Evil Times

To the leader: according to The Sheminith. A Psalm of David.

Help, O Lord, for there is no longer anyone who is godly;
    the faithful have disappeared from humankind.
They utter lies to each other;
    with flattering lips and a double heart they speak.

May the Lord cut off all flattering lips,
    the tongue that makes great boasts,
those who say, “With our tongues we will prevail;
    our lips are our own—who is our master?”

“Because the poor are despoiled, because the needy groan,
    I will now rise up,” says the Lord;
    “I will place them in the safety for which they long.”
The promises of the Lord are promises that are pure,
    silver refined in a furnace on the ground,
    purified seven times.

You, O Lord, will protect us;
you will guard us from this generation forever.
On every side the wicked prowl,
as vileness is exalted among humankind.

Prayer:
Eternal God, we rejoice this morning in the gift of life, which we have received by your grace, and the new life you give in Jesus Christ.  Especially we thank you for
the love of our families…
the affection of our friends….
strength and abilities to serve your purpose today…
this community in which.we live…
opportunities to give as we have received..
(other prayers of thanksgiving…)

God of grace, we offer our prayers for the needs of others and commit ourselves to serve them even as we have been served in Jesus Christ.
Especially we pray for
those closest to us, families, friends, neighbors…
refugees and homeless men, women, and children…
the outcast and the persecuted…
those from whom we are estranged…
the church in Africa…
(other prayers of intercession…). Amen

Psalm and Prayer of the Day July 6

Psalm 62

Song of Trust in God Alone

To the leader: according to Jeduthun. A Psalm of David.

For God alone my soul waits in silence;
    from him comes my salvation.
He alone is my rock and my salvation,
    my fortress; I shall never be shaken.

How long will you assail a person,
    will you batter your victim, all of you,
    as you would a leaning wall, a tottering fence?
Their only plan is to bring down a person of prominence.
    They take pleasure in falsehood;
they bless with their mouths,
    but inwardly they curse.Selah

For God alone my soul waits in silence,
    for my hope is from him.
He alone is my rock and my salvation,
    my fortress; I shall not be shaken.
On God rests my deliverance and my honor;
    my mighty rock, my refuge is in God.

Trust in him at all times, O people;
    pour out your heart before him;
    God is a refuge for us.Selah

Those of low estate are but a breath,
    those of high estate are a delusion;
in the balances they go up;
    they are together lighter than a breath.
10 Put no confidence in extortion,
    and set no vain hopes on robbery;
    if riches increase, do not set your heart on them.

11 Once God has spoken;
    twice have I heard this:
that power belongs to God,
12     and steadfast love belongs to you, O Lord.
For you repay to all
    according to their work.

Prayer

As you cause the sun to rise, O God, bring the light of Christ to dawn in our souls and dispel all darkness.  Give us grace to reflect Christ’s glory; and let his love show in our deeds, his peace shine in our words, and his healing in our touch, that all may give him praise, now and forever.  Amen.

Psalm and Prayer of the Day July 3

Psalm 88

Prayer for Help in Despondency

A Song. A Psalm of the Korahites. To the leader: according to Mahalath Leannoth. A Maskil of Heman the Ezrahite.

O Lord, God of my salvation,
    when, at night, I cry out in your presence,
let my prayer come before you;
    incline your ear to my cry.

For my soul is full of troubles,
    and my life draws near to Sheol.
I am counted among those who go down to the Pit;
    I am like those who have no help,
like those forsaken among the dead,
    like the slain that lie in the grave,
like those whom you remember no more,
    for they are cut off from your hand.
You have put me in the depths of the Pit,
    in the regions dark and deep.
Your wrath lies heavy upon me,
    and you overwhelm me with all your waves.Selah

You have caused my companions to shun me;
    you have made me a thing of horror to them.
I am shut in so that I cannot escape;
    my eye grows dim through sorrow.
Every day I call on you, O Lord;
    I spread out my hands to you.
10 Do you work wonders for the dead?
    Do the shades rise up to praise you?Selah
11 Is your steadfast love declared in the grave,
    or your faithfulness in Abaddon?
12 Are your wonders known in the darkness,
    or your saving help in the land of forgetfulness?

13 But I, O Lord, cry out to you;
in the morning my prayer comes before you.
14 O Lord, why do you cast me off?
Why do you hide your face from me?
15 Wretched and close to death from my youth up,
I suffer your terrors; I am desperate.[a]
16 Your wrath has swept over me;
your dread assaults destroy me.
17 They surround me like a flood all day long;
from all sides they close in on me.
18 You have caused friend and neighbor to shun me;
my companions are in darkness.

Reflection:
This is a raw psalm.  In the words we can almost feel the desperation in the writer’s soul.  While we hope we may not ever experience emotions or situations like those reflected in this psalm, the fragility of life in general guarantees we will know great heartache and at times despair.  There are times, when as people of faith, we turn to God asking for deliverance, asking for attention, asking for an end.  We question why and ask God to stop whatever it is that is happening.  We may wonder why in our commitment to God do we still go through heartache and suffering.  The emotions and questions we express during those times put us in the company of saints who have gone before us.  We are not alone as we question God, as our faith shakes, or as we cry out.  This psalm allows us to rest in those emotions without a pretty tied up bow at the end.  Perhaps that fact makes Psalm 88 that much more powerful – acknowledging the possibility the psalmist had not yet found the peace he or she was looking for.  The prayer had not yet been answered as the poem was written.  And yet – here it is, a sacred scripture.  A sacred prayer and one we have permission to pray.

Prayer

We are grateful, Holy God, for your willingness to hear us as we pray.  We are grateful you receive who we are in our highs and lows.  Shore up our faith today, o strengthening God.  Help us to face the difficulties of daily life and the extra challenges which come our way.  Help us to remember you want our whole hearts which means, at times, there will be anger and grief.  We pray today for those who are facing these circumstances.  Enable us to encourage them, to be present with them, to be as steady as you are as we support and nurture one another.  Bless your church this day as we minister where you have placed us.  Thank you, loving God, for guiding us all of our days.  Amen.

Prayer and Psalm of the Day July 2

Psalm 143

Hear my prayer, O Lord;
    give ear to my supplications in your faithfulness;
    answer me in your righteousness.
Do not enter into judgment with your servant,
    for no one living is righteous before you.

For the enemy has pursued me,
    crushing my life to the ground,
    making me sit in darkness like those long dead.
Therefore my spirit faints within me;
    my heart within me is appalled.

I remember the days of old,
    I think about all your deeds,
    I meditate on the works of your hands.
I stretch out my hands to you;
    my soul thirsts for you like a parched land.Selah

Answer me quickly, O Lord;
    my spirit fails.
Do not hide your face from me,
    or I shall be like those who go down to the Pit.
Let me hear of your steadfast love in the morning,
    for in you I put my trust.
Teach me the way I should go,
    for to you I lift up my soul.

Save me, O Lord, from my enemies;
    I have fled to you for refuge.
10 Teach me to do your will,
    for you are my God.
Let your good spirit lead me
    on a level path.

11 For your name’s sake, O Lord, preserve my life.
    In your righteousness bring me out of trouble.
12 In your steadfast love cut off my enemies,
    and destroy all my adversaries,
    for I am your servant.

Praying for God to destroy our enemies seems contrary to Jesus’ teachings to pray for one’s enemies.  This is an honest prayer, and one full of raw emotion.  This is a psalm of David and reflects times in his life when he was threatened.  His hope was in the Lord and God’s ability to deliver him while defeating those who worked against him.  His prayers were truthful, much like we have prayed during war time, fear, desperation.  Save us and defeat the enemy!  Mixed in with this psalm, along with the prayers for victory over his foes, David seeks God’s will and desires righteousness.  Psalms such as this one remind us how messy life can be, that what we want may not always be what God wants.  Our means may not always be God’s means of achieving an outcome.  Yet, life is often about our struggles to understand and overcome as we seek to understand and serve God.
Prayer:
Holy God, you scatter the power of death and raise us together with Christ through his life, death, and resurrection.  We thank you for the gift of this day and opportunities it holds for us.
Especially we thank you for
the community of faith in our church…
those with whom we work or share common concerns…
the diversity of your children…
indications of your love at work in the world…
those who work for reconciliation…
(Other prayers of thanksgiving)…
Mighty God, with the dawn of your love you reveal your victory over all that would destroy or harm and you brighten the lives of all who need you.
Especially we pray for
families suffering separation…
people different from ourselves…
those isolated by sickness or sorrow…
the victims of violence or warfare…
the church of the Pacific region…
(Other prayers of intercession)…
Amen

Psalm and Prayer of the Day July 1

Psalm 65

Praise is due to you,
    O God, in Zion;
and to you shall vows be performed,
    O you who answer prayer!
To you all flesh shall come.
When deeds of iniquity overwhelm us,
    you forgive our transgressions.
Happy are those whom you choose and bring near
    to live in your courts.
We shall be satisfied with the goodness of your house,
    your holy temple.

By awesome deeds you answer us with deliverance,
    O God of our salvation;
you are the hope of all the ends of the earth
    and of the farthest seas.
By your[a] strength you established the mountains;
    you are girded with might.
You silence the roaring of the seas,
    the roaring of their waves,
    the tumult of the peoples.
Those who live at earth’s farthest bounds are awed by your signs;
you make the gateways of the morning and the evening shout for joy.

You visit the earth and water it,
    you greatly enrich it;
the river of God is full of water;
    you provide the people with grain,
    for so you have prepared it.
10 You water its furrows abundantly,
    settling its ridges,
softening it with showers,
    and blessing its growth.
11 You crown the year with your bounty;
    your wagon tracks overflow with richness.
12 The pastures of the wilderness overflow,
    the hills gird themselves with joy,
13 the meadows clothe themselves with flocks,
    the valleys deck themselves with grain,
    they shout and sing together for joy.

Prayer

O God, you are the one who defines blessing. You have created so much beauty and bounty in this world. Your creativity is astounding. Your care is immeasurable. Open our eyes to see you in the world around us, in the people, in all living things, in the colors, in the great and the small. Help us to cherish how and what you cherish so we can take care of your creation as you take care of us. Amen.

Psalm and Prayer of the Day June 30

Psalm 146

Praise the Lord!
Praise the Lord, O my soul!
I will praise the Lord as long as I live;
    I will sing praises to my God all my life long.

Do not put your trust in princes,
    in mortals, in whom there is no help.
When their breath departs, they return to the earth;
    on that very day their plans perish.

Happy are those whose help is the God of Jacob,
    whose hope is in the Lord their God,
who made heaven and earth,
    the sea, and all that is in them;
who keeps faith forever;
    who executes justice for the oppressed;
    who gives food to the hungry.

The Lord sets the prisoners free;
    the Lord opens the eyes of the blind.
The Lord lifts up those who are bowed down;
    the Lord loves the righteous.
The Lord watches over the strangers;
    he upholds the orphan and the widow,
    but the way of the wicked he brings to ruin.

10 The Lord will reign forever,
    your God, O Zion, for all generations.
Praise the Lord!

God of our salvation, as we welcome a new day heaven and earth sing your praise.  Cause us to live and grow in faith so that we may bear good fruit for the glory of your holy realm; through Jesus Christ our Lord, Amen.

Psalm and Prayer of the Day June 29

Psalm 57

Be merciful to me, O God, be merciful to me,
    for in you my soul takes refuge;
in the shadow of your wings I will take refuge,
    until the destroying storms pass by.
I cry to God Most High,
    to God who fulfills his purpose for me.
He will send from heaven and save me,
    he will put to shame those who trample on me.Selah
God will send forth his steadfast love and his faithfulness.

I lie down among lions
    that greedily devour[a] human prey;
their teeth are spears and arrows,
    their tongues sharp swords.

Be exalted, O God, above the heavens.
    Let your glory be over all the earth.

They set a net for my steps;
    my soul was bowed down.
They dug a pit in my path,
    but they have fallen into it themselves.Selah
My heart is steadfast, O God,
    my heart is steadfast.
I will sing and make melody.
    Awake, my soul!
Awake, O harp and lyre!
    I will awake the dawn.
I will give thanks to you, O Lord, among the peoples;
    I will sing praises to you among the nations.
10 For your steadfast love is as high as the heavens;
    your faithfulness extends to the clouds.

11 Be exalted, O God, above the heavens.
    Let your glory be over all the earth.

Prayer
We cry to you, O God Most High, burdened by the cares of this world.  Today we pray for those who will struggle to feed themselves and their families, who will grieve the loss of loved ones, who will receive a difficult diagnosis, who will lose a friend.  We pray for those who will suffer from injustice yet again and for those who perpetrate it.  We pray for those seeking after you with hearts full of hope and for those whose hearts have little room for anyone but themselves.  Help us to navigate this world and this life with your wisdom and your grace.  Even as we take refuge in the shadow of your wings, help us also to live courageously in the light of your love.  Amen.

Psalm and Prayer of the Day June 25

Psalm 36

Transgression speaks to the wicked
    deep in their hearts;
there is no fear of God
    before their eyes.
For they flatter themselves in their own eyes
    that their iniquity cannot be found out and hated.
The words of their mouths are mischief and deceit;
    they have ceased to act wisely and do good.
They plot mischief while on their beds;
    they are set on a way that is not good;
    they do not reject evil.

Your steadfast love, O Lord, extends to the heavens,
    your faithfulness to the clouds.
Your righteousness is like the mighty mountains,
    your judgments are like the great deep;
    you save humans and animals alike, O Lord.

How precious is your steadfast love, O God!
    All people may take refuge in the shadow of your wings.
They feast on the abundance of your house,
    and you give them drink from the river of your delights.
For with you is the fountain of life;
    in your light we see light.

10 O continue your steadfast love to those who know you,
    and your salvation to the upright of heart!
11 Do not let the foot of the arrogant tread on me,
    or the hand of the wicked drive me away.
12 There the evildoers lie prostrate;
    they are thrust down, unable to rise.

Prayer

Holy God, your love is higher than the heavens and your grace is wider than the sea.  Awaken our hearts to the joy of your presence and open our lips to sing your praise.  Today we thank you for….(personal thanksgiving).  Today we pray for the needs in our lives and in the world…(personal intercession). Amen
